Chaga Mushroom is a black parasitic fungus produced on the living trunks of mature birch that resembles burnt charcoal. It causes the tree's death in 5-7 years, and in fact, Chaga Mushroom is called "birch cancer" in Russia. The shape of the mushroom also resembles that of cancer in the human body. After Chaga is harvested, the birch tree withers and dies. Due to pollination of its seeds, a next generation is ready for harvest 20 years later. Siberian species grow best in wintry conditions below minus 40 deg C at least 4-5 months per year.

The fungus is most frequently encountered in the sterile condition on living trunks. The conks, acting like a wedge, burst through the bark and appear as large gall-like structures, varying in size from 5 to 20 cm diameter, with a very irregular, cracked, and deeply fissured surface.

The structure forces the bark apart, keeping the wound open and allowing the fungus to enter unaffected wood. The conks have a hard, woody to almost stony texture. When removed from the tree the internal surface is rusty brown, somewhat granular in appearance, and is often mottled with whitish or cream-colored veins.

Wild naturally growing Chaga is very rare and very valuable. It is harvested once per 20 years from selective birch trees. Out of 10,000 aged trees, perhaps two or three will have Chaga growth.
